Hetero-settler Culture, 2021

cotton on linen, 110x70cm

Exhibited at Caloundra Regional Gallery, QLD

Hetero-settler Culture explores the co-production of heterosexuality, settler-colonialism and culture. The change from “heterosexual” to “hetero-settler” recognises that the logics of Modern sexuality and desire cannot be separated from settler-colonialism. For settler artists such as myself, cultural production is inextricable from these histories. This work is a statement about how settlers see and reproduce culture. It is glitched, smeared and distorted as a result of being reproduced everyday. Like a degraded photocopy of a photocopy, the obsessive reproduction of settler culture limits what is seeable, sayable and doable.
