Nowra Landscape 1974/2022

oil on purchased painting

Exhibited at Heysen Academy S.A.

The artwork is a modification of an original landscape painting by Otto Kuster titled 'Nowra Landscape' from 1974. The original has been overpainted with hundreds of layers of dark red glaze, creating a visceral, ominous, stain glass effect. The technique of glazing was developed in the Renaissance, and in this work it is used on top of an Impressionistic style. The two styles touch, creating a tension between different types of Western vision, revealing the construction of imagining the landscape. The method of painting has been repeated until the representation is erased
