Bottle Brush Newlands 1918/2023

The work is a modification of an original 1918 landscape painting, “Bottle Brush Newlands” by J F Hackett that was purchased from eBay. It was made by sanding back the painting and collecting the sanded pigment from above and below the horizon. The pigment was hand-ground into two new oil paints and reapplied to its respective half of the image. The painting was then placed back in its original frame. The landscape painting has been turned into an abstract duotone through its own materiality.
